He Is My Assurance

Job 19:25-27 / New International Version - "I know my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. 26-And after my skin has been destroyed; yet in my flesh I will see God; 27-I myself will see him with my own eyes - I, and not another.  How my heart yearns within me"!

In a matter of days, everything was destroyed.  First his 11,000 livestock and servants were stolen, burned or killed.  Then his ten children were all killed at once. To make matters worse, this unfortunate man's skin was plagued with painful sores, which he scraped off with a piece of broken pottery.

How could anyone endure such tragedy?  To be fair, Job mourns, and laments, and weeps.  He is confused, hopeless, and weak.  On top of feeling cursed and desperate, he is taunted by his friends and wife:  Give up on God; he has given up on you!  Stop waiting on God to redeem you; he has obviously forgotten you!  But Job refuses to curse God, as God knew he would, and despite the tragedies he endured.  Job is assured that God will not fail when it matters most.

Job's faith has been weakened by the test, but he clutches desperately to the one promise that can sustain him:  no matter what happens to Job in his earth-bound life, nothing can take away the joy he will share with God in his eternal life.

  1. Everything on earth is a fleeting treasure, a momentary comfort that can be lost in a flash. But the assurance of your eternal place in his kingdom, if you have submitted your life to Jesus Christ, is indestructible. This should give you comfort today!
