James 4:1-2 / New Living Translation - "What is causing quarrels and fights among you? Don't they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them"
Temper tantrums are as common for adults as they are for children; they just look different in action. Children have not learned to curb the screaming and stomping vent of frustration or anger, while adults have more restrained behavior. But the heart is the same, and the reactions stem from the same provocation.
James cuts right to the heart of sin. We want what we want but we don't have it, so we throw a tantrum. It's amazing how simple it is! Watch a child and this truth will play out soon enough. Watch an adult, and it may be more difficult to discern, but unfortunately it is there in all of us.
Praise God for his amazing grace, which is extended to us for this very reason. Let us submit to God's forgiveness and draw near to him for his cleansing and purifying grace. It washes over us, and our tantrums are forgiven. When we humble ourselves, he promises to exalt us. What more could we want.
Thank the Lord today for his mercy and grace. He loves it when you dwell on that.
